Cincinnati Reds Manager Terry Francona Clarifies Tyler Stephenson’s Role Amid Positional Speculations

Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona has provided clear guidance regarding catcher Tyler Stephenson’s role for the upcoming season, addressing recent speculations about his defensive assignments.

Francona has decided that Stephenson will not serve as a first baseman on days he isn’t catching. Instead, the plan is for Stephenson to focus primarily on his catching duties, with occasional appearances as a designated hitter when backup catcher Jose Trevino is behind the plate. This approach aims to optimize Stephenson’s performance by concentrating on his primary position and reducing the physical demands associated with playing multiple defensive roles.

This decision may lead to a decrease in Stephenson’s total plate appearances, given the Reds’ acquisition of Trevino as a reliable backup catcher. Francona’s strategy reflects a commitment to maintaining player health and maximizing efficiency within the team’s roster.

Stephenson, who has been a pivotal player for the Reds, demonstrated significant offensive improvement last season. He elevated his OPS from .696 to .782, achieving career highs in home runs (19), runs (69), and RBIs (66). Additionally, he led the National League in total appearances as a catcher, with 127 games behind the plate.

By delineating Stephenson’s responsibilities, Francona aims to enhance the team’s overall performance while ensuring that players remain in roles where they can be most effective.
