Fox News: Due to Unforseen Circumstances, head coach Darian DeVries Terminate Contract, Part-Ways with West Virginia Mountaineers men’s basketball.. See details

In a surprising turn of events, Darian DeVries has resigned from his position as head coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers men’s basketball team due to unforeseen circumstances. This decision comes less than a year after his appointment in March 2024, following a successful tenure at Drake University.

During his brief period at West Virginia, DeVries faced significant challenges, including rebuilding a roster that had lost nearly all its players. His son, Tucker DeVries, a standout player at Drake and two-time Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, transferred to West Virginia to play under his father’s guidance. Unfortunately, both Tucker DeVries and teammate Jayden Stone have been sidelined, with indications they may not return for the remainder of the season.

The Mountaineers have struggled throughout the season, and Coach DeVries emphasized the need for improved offensive production and defense to overcome their current losing streak.

As of now, the university has not announced an interim head coach or potential candidates to fill the vacancy. The athletic department is expected to conduct a thorough search to find a suitable replacement to lead the program forward.

This unexpected departure adds to the recent history of coaching instability for the Mountaineers, following the resignation of long-time coach Bob Huggins in June 2023 and the interim tenure of Josh Eilert during the 2023-24 season.

  1. Fans and stakeholders await further updates from the university regarding the future leadership of the men’s basketball program.
