Milwaukee Bucks Welcome Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Back as Special Teams Coach and Franchise Ambassador
Milwaukee, WI — The Milwaukee Bucks are proud to announce the return of NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to the organization as Special Teams Coach and Franchise Ambassador for the 2025–26 NBA season. The six-time NBA champion and Hall of Famer rejoins the team where his iconic professional career began, bringing decades of basketball knowledge, leadership, and cultural impact.
Abdul-Jabbar will collaborate closely with the Bucks’ coaching staff to improve strategic play execution, especially in high-pressure, late-game circumstances. As Franchise Ambassador, he will also represent the Bucks in community engagement, player development, and worldwide marketing initiatives.
“Milwaukee gave me my start, and it’s an honour to return in a role that allows me to give back,” Abdul-Jabbar told the crowd. “I’m excited to work with this talented team and contribute to a culture of excellence both on and off the court.”
Originally selected as the first overall pick in the 1969 NBA Draft, Abdul-Jabbar led the Bucks to their first NBA Championship in 1971 and won three MVP awards during his six seasons with the franchise. Known for his signature skyhook and dominant presence, he helped define an era of Milwaukee basketball.
“Kareem is not only one of the greatest players of all time—he’s also a thinker, a teacher, and a cultural icon,” said Bucks Head Coach Doc Rivers. “We are thrilled to welcome him back in a role where he can impact our team’s growth and inspire our entire organization.”
In addition to his coaching duties, Abdul-Jabbar’s ambassadorial responsibilities will include appearances at NBA events, global brand promotion, and engagement on educational and humanitarian programs in the Milwaukee community.
“This is a full-circle moment,” said Bucks Governor Wes Edens. “Kareem helped build the foundation of this franchise. Having him back with the Bucks reaffirms our commitment to honoring our legacy while pursuing greatness in the present.”
Abdul-Jabbar’s homecoming coincides with the Bucks’ pursuit of another NBA championship, led by superstars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard. His presence will serve as a bridge between periods and a wealth of knowledge for players, staff, and fans alike.
