James Hetfield’s Epochal Open Letter to Metallica, Our Fans, and the Whole Heavy Metal Community
With a heart full of appreciation, humility, and wonder, I write this message to my brothers in Metallica, to every fan who has supported us, and to the large, influential family that comprises the global heavy metal community.
In the life of a musician, there are times when the lights go down, the commotion stops, and the truth becomes evident. Without all of you, I would not be the guy I am today, the artist I have become, or the soul I am still developing into.
This path has been defined by an unwavering force: your belief in us, from the early days when we scraped together riffs in garages and performed in packed bars full of smoke, sweat, and raw promise to the enormous venues that now tremble under the weight of your voices. Forged in the flames of passion, revolt, and solidarity, Metallica has always been more than just a band—we are a real, breathing movement. And you’ve all been a part of that fire, whether you’re shouting lyrics from the farthest seat in the house or performing on stage next to me.
To my brothers, Rob, Kirk, and Lars: You have been my allies, healers, challengers, and pillars. You’ve given me the room to falter and the fortitude to get back up through every storm, victory, breakdown, and rebirth. You’ve demonstrated to me that being a brother is about persevering through life’s ups and downs rather than striving for perfection.
To our supporters: You are this machine’s lifeblood. With a devotion that transcends time, you have supported us over many years. Every night, you’ve reminded us that metal is more than just a genre, filled stadiums, blasted our music through your worst moments, inked our messages on your flesh, and reared your kids on our sound. It serves as a lifeline.
To the community of heavy metal—
Thank you for fostering an atmosphere where strangers become family and where unfiltered human emotion is turned into creativity, vitality, and meaning. Your embrace gave me the strength to be honest, confront my fears, and develop as a person as well as an artist.
I feel nothing but thankfulness and resolve as I gaze ahead at the road still roaring in front of us and back at the route we’ve built. There is still so much fire to share, so much life to live, and so much music to compose.
I’m grateful that you gave me a space to grow into the person I was destined to be, a voice, and a home.
I appreciate your affection. for the assistance. For the haven you’ve created for me on this trip.
With all of my heart,
James Hetfield
