Max Klesmit FaceTimes Former Teammate Austin Patterson After NCAA Tournament Selection

March 21, 2025 – As soon as Wisconsin’s name appeared in the NCAA Tournament bracket, senior guard Max Klesmit wasted no time reaching out to an old friend. Moments after learning that the Badgers would face Montana in the first round, Klesmit FaceTimed his former roommate, Austin Patterson, who now plays guard for the Grizzlies.

The call wasn’t about scouting or trash talk—it was a moment between two close friends, suddenly set to compete on one of college basketball’s biggest stages.

“I love that dude to death,” Klesmit said when asked about Patterson. “He’s one of my closest friends, and now we get to battle it out in the tournament. It’s pretty crazy how things work out.”

Patterson, a key piece of Montana’s backcourt, spent time as Klesmit’s roommate during their college careers before their paths diverged. While Klesmit transferred to Wisconsin, Patterson found his way to Montana, where he has carved out a role as a reliable shooter and defender.

Though emotions will be high, Klesmit made it clear that once the ball tips, friendship takes a backseat.

“We’ll catch up after the game, but between those lines, it’s all business,” he said with a grin.

The matchup between Wisconsin (No. 4 seed) and Montana (No. 13 seed) is set for Friday, with both teams looking to make a statement in the opening round. Klesmit and Patterson may be close off the court, but come game time, expect nothing but competitive fire from two former roommates turned opponents.
