Michigan State University is apparently planning to appoint J Batt, the current athletic director at Georgia Tech, as its next athletic director. This action comes after Alan Haller stepped down in May 2025.
J Batt, Georgia Tech’s athletic director since October 2022, has been essential in revamping the Yellow Jackets’ sporting programs. Under his tenure, Georgia Tech set new fundraising records, including $78.2 million in contributions to the Alexander-Tharpe Fund during his first fiscal year. He also started the “Full Steam Ahead” campaign, which aims to raise $500 million for facility upgrades, with approximately $300 million already contributed.
Batt’s stint at Georgia Tech was distinguished by strategic hires, such as promoting Brent Key to head football coach and hiring Damon Stoudamire as men’s basketball head coach. These moves have proven critical in increasing the competitiveness of Georgia Tech’s athletic programs.
Prior to joining Georgia Tech, Batt was the University of Alabama’s senior deputy athletic director, chief operating officer, and chief revenue officer. There, he played an important part in the “Crimson Standard” effort, a 10-year, $600 million capital campaign to improve Alabama’s athletic facilities.
Michigan State’s choice to hire Batt comes at a critical juncture, as the university attempts to navigate the changing environment of collegiate athletics, including Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rules and prospective revenue sharing structures. Batt’s significant experience in fundraising and revenue management prepares him to lead the Spartans into this new era.
The change also implies that Georgia Tech will need to identify a replacement capable of carrying on the momentum Batt established. With current renovations and the recent resignation of legendary baseball coach Danny Hall, the incoming athletic director will have significant hurdles in keeping the team on its upward track.
As Michigan State prepares to welcome J Batt, the university community expects a period of development and innovation under his leadership. His track record implies a dedication to excellence both on and off the field, which is consistent with the Spartans’ rich athletic legacy.
