“I’ve always believed that if you’re blessed enough to be in a position to help others, then you have to,” Akins said. “East Lansing has been my home. It embraced me, supported me, and shaped me. This is my way of giving back—and making sure kids in this city have hope, shelter, and the resources they need to thrive.”
Akins’ initiative, which will be called the “Roots to Rise Housing Project,” aims to provide stable, long-term transitional housing to youth aged 13–21 who are experiencing homelessness or living in unsafe conditions. The facility will feature not just housing units but also mental health services, educational support, vocational training, and mentorship programs.

Inspired by Personal Experience
While Akins did not grow up homeless, he spoke candidly about witnessing poverty and instability growing up in Farmington Hills, Michigan. He had friends who bounced between couches, others who relied on school lunches as their only consistent meals, and some who, as he put it, “fell through the cracks because no one saw them.”
“I never forgot those stories,” Akins said. “I carried them with me when I went to class, when I practiced, when I played in front of thousands of people. And now, I want to do something meaningful that honors those kids and helps change the story for others.”
Akins also credited his parents, coaches, and teammates for instilling in him a sense of community and purpose. “This isn’t just my donation,” he said. “It’s a reflection of everyone who helped me become the man I am today.”
