NFL NEWS: Cowboys Head Coach Makes Final Training Camp Decision on Shedeur Sanders
FRISCO, TX – May 9, 2025
The Dallas Cowboys have officially made a headline-grabbing decision heading into training camp: rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders will be invited to compete for a backup role behind starting quarterback Dak Prescott.
Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy announced the decision Friday morning at the team’s headquarters in Frisco, putting an end to weeks of speculation regarding Sanders’ future with the team. The former Colorado standout, and son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, impressed the coaching staff during rookie minicamp and voluntary OTA workouts.
“Shedeur has shown poise, command of the offense, and the work ethic we look for in a Cowboy,” said McCarthy. “We believe he deserves the opportunity to show what he can do in a full NFL training camp environment.”
Sanders, who went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft but quickly signed with Dallas as a priority free agent, has garnered national attention for both his talent and pedigree. While the team has veterans Cooper Rush and Trey Lance on the roster, McCarthy confirmed that Sanders will be “given every chance to earn a spot on the final 53.”
Sources inside the organization have indicated that offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is particularly intrigued by Sanders’ accuracy and football IQ.
With this move, the Cowboys not only gain a potential future asset at quarterback but also continue to draw national interest — both for football reasons and the buzz surrounding Deion Sanders’ NFL legacy.
Training camp opens July 23rd in Oxnard, California, where Sanders will face his biggest test yet.
