Nick Saban’s and Lane Kiffin
When it comes to his Nittany Lions team or college football in general, James Franklin of Penn State rarely overlooks the big picture.
PSU is currently in a great position as they prepare to play Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl on Tuesday. One of the quarterfinal playoff games will be between PSU and Boise State. Franklin is, however, dissatisfied with the state of his sport as a whole. Among other things, there are issues with NIL and the transfer portal. However, the head coach’s greatest objective at the time is that CFB find a commissioner. And he has a certain man in mind who would be great for the post. Who will he choose?
According to ECF’s Instagram post, Franklin referred to Nick Saban, Alabama’s former head coach, as ‘the obvious option’ to serve as CFB commissioner. What a thought! And during the press conference, he said: “I think one of the most important things that we can do is, let’s get a commissioner of college football that is waking up every single morning and going to bed every single night, making decisions that’s in the best interest of college football.” Nick Saban’s bid to become CFB Commissioner appears to be increasing.
However, Franklin’s candidacy of Saban for the fake office is not unusual. Lane Kiffin, the Rebels’ coach and a long-time Saban assistant, stated on X last week that he supports Saban for the position. Quite apparent! Kiffin was let down by the CFP’s decision to skip Ole Miss in the playoffs. Furthermore, Franklin admitted that selecting a commissioner would be an important first step towards “moving forward and coming up with some solutions” for the transfer site and NIL. He also gave his own suggestions.
Franklin stated that it is time for sports executives to stop analysing problems and start finding solutions to encourage athletes to stay on rosters and play until the end of the season. In order to shorten the season and give a more equitable comparison for the CFP selection committee, he proposed eliminating conference championship games.
Is it truly necessary for CFB to have a commissioner? CFB has seen substantial conference reorientation in the previous few years alone. The CFB Playoff expanded from four to twelve teams. More relaxed transfer laws will be implemented through the site. Athletes may also be able to increase their earnings through their NIL. Furthermore, the calendar’s scheduling has sparked criticism because the December transfer portal opening and the early signing period for high school players overlap between the end of the regular season and the start periods of the CFP and bowl games.
This indicates that coaches and organisations are concurrently preparing for important playoff games, assessing high school prospects, re-recruiting their own teams to prevent players from accessing the portal, and monitoring the portal for potential outside additions. However, there have clearly been benefits, such as providing gamers greater choice to change to better settings and make money. However, as Franklin pointed out, many major shifts have resulted in chaos. And he’s totally correct. Let us see if Saban accepts Franklin’s suggestion to become commissioner.
