In a significant boost to their defensive lineup, the Michigan Wolverines have secured a commitment from former Alabama defensive lineman Damon Payne. Payne, a 6-foot-4, 313-pound athlete from Belleville, Michigan, was a five-star recruit in the 2021 class and ranked as the No. 24 overall prospect. After three seasons with the Crimson Tide, he has decided to return to his home state to play under head coach Sherrone Moore.

During his tenure at Alabama, Payne recorded 30 tackles and 0.5 sacks, primarily in a rotational role. With the recent departure of standout defensive tackle Mason Graham, who declared for the 2025 NFL Draft, Payne’s arrival is timely and expected to fill critical gaps in Michigan’s defensive front.

The Wolverines’ recruitment efforts have been notably successful this season. In addition to Payne, Michigan flipped five-star defensive lineman Nathanial Marshall from Auburn in December 2024. Marshall, standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 270 pounds, is ranked as the No. 2 defensive lineman and No. 26 overall recruit in the 2025 class. His commitment further solidifies Michigan’s defensive strength for the upcoming season.

The Wolverines’ recruiting momentum doesn’t stop there. They also secured a commitment from five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood, who flipped from LSU to Michigan. Underwood, hailing from Belleville High School—the same alma mater as Payne—is the top overall recruit in the 2025 class. His decision to join Michigan underscores the program’s growing appeal to elite talent.

These strategic acquisitions reflect head coach Sherrone Moore’s dedication to building a formidable team capable of competing at the highest level. With the infusion of top-tier talent on both sides of the ball, the Wolverines are poised for a promising 2025 season.
