I’ve seen a lot of postings, comments, headlines, and conjecture in the last few weeks. There’s a lot of talk about where I might go or what I might do next, along with rumors about my future and questions about my dedication and goals. I know that success and scrutiny breed curiosity, but all too frequently, what I see online deviates greatly from reality.

I will thus state unequivocally that the majority of what is now available is either erroneous, incomplete, or misconstrued. I’m not going shopping. I’m not trying to get away. I’m not “checking out.” I’m present. Because I have faith in this squad and this city, I signed a new contract. I won’t leave until I make that decision, and when I do, you’ll hear it directly from me rather than through a leak, rumor, or hot take.

I’ve read the stories that make me reevaluate my priorities. When some eyes came upon a quote regarding the contract of another player, they instantly twisted it into something it wasn’t. Respect was at the heart of what I said and meant: respect for colleagues, respect for the hard work required to succeed, and respect for the journeys of others. It was reported that way, not by me, if it came across negatively after being cut and reshared without context.

What you’re witnessing is conjecture if you didn’t hear it from me, my camp, or my agency. Furthermore, it can be risky to speculate in this sport and in this location. It fosters mistrust. The relationship between players and spectators is weakened. I’ve witnessed the results of that. That’s not what I want here.

I won’t act as though I don’t care what you think, fans who have supported me through good times and bad. You are important. However, I also want you to think about this before jumping on a trendy topic or headline: do you know? Are you merely repeating nonsense, or do you have firsthand information? Perhaps wait if it’s the latter. Everyone is accountable for the information they disseminate online.

I’m still the same person. I appear. I’m employed. I make an effort to set an example. Every shift, practice, and game, I strive to gain your trust. I would say so if I were unhappy or planning to leave. I’m concentrating on this squad, this season, and this city till then.

I therefore want to express my gratitude to everyone who gives me the benefit of the doubt. I appreciate everyone who encourages me, pushes me, and holds me responsible. You are visible to me. You are heard. And thank you for that.

Let’s put an end to the noise and return to the things that truly count: playing terrific hockey, encouraging one another, and keeping our attention on the rink.

Auston.
